Edgar Payne: Canyon de Chelly and the Southwest

Navajo riders moving beneath the sandstone walls of Canyon de Chelly are among Payne's most celebrated images. The subject began with a railroad commission in 1917.

The 1917 Santa Fe commission

In 1917 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway asked Payne to paint the Southwest along its route from Albuquerque to California, part of a long-running program under the railway's advertising chief William H. Simpson that exchanged travel, lodging and sometimes cash for paintings. That year Edgar and Elsie spent four months painting at Canyon de Chelly. According to Wikipedia, the region "from Taos, New Mexico to the Grand Canyon, became one of Payne's two main inspirations for the next twenty years."

The subject in museums and exhibitions

Hassrick, "Edgar Payne's Southwest." Monument Valley, Riverbed toured internationally in The Irvine Museum's Masters of Light exhibition of 2002–2004.
